Looking for new music — yes, aren’t we all. First go here to hear Ximena Sariñana, then go to the Crescent Ballroom Wednesday night and listen and watch her perform.

I met Julio, one of Ms. Sariñana’s concert promoters, Sunday at a friends house and my ears perk up whenever I hear a name I haven’t heard before. Then I heard her husky voice dominating a playful pop beat and wanted others to know more.

Sariñana is already a success in her home country, Mexico. She doesn’t look manufactured (even though she was a child actress); you’re catching someone who’s just here and there to enjoy the music. Sariñana, lives in Mexico, sings in both English and Spanish and seems comfortable in her bilingualdom. She’s been around for about 3 years, since her debut Spanish-language album Mediocre in 2008.

Two months from now, Puddle Of Mudd will release a CD of covers; pulled from their influences and history.

Their fifth studio release, Re:(disc)overed is a celebration of sorts for the polyglot band’s 10 years in music, and if someone’s gonna let them do it, well heck they’ll do it. They’re auspicious beginnings demand nothing less.

“We chose some that may be unexpected to some just so we could push the Puddle envelope a bit,” said PoM’s lead guitarist Paul Phillips.

He said the new versions of the songs were more tribute than reinvention. “Our goal in interpreting these songs was to pay more tribute rather than reinvent,” Phillips said. “These are all classics that are perfect in every sense, so who are we to mess with that? We just wanted to represent them in their true form and add a little of our sound to them. We cut everything with very few takes and tried to keep it very live like those old seventies records.”

The new album includes: AC/DC’s “TNT,” Steve Miller’s “The Joker,” Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” Billy Squier’s “Everybody Wants You,” Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty’s duet “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (which Puddle Of Mudd recorded with BC Jean), Steve Miller’s “The Joker,” Free’s “All Right Now,” Bad Company’s “Shooting Star,” James Gang’s “Funk,” Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Maker,” Neil Young’s “Old Man,” and the first single, The Rolling Stones soulful classic, “Gimme Shelter.”

Wes Scantlin said winnowing down the songs to the final cut brought out the wrinkles, in a way.

“As I’ve become an adult, I’ve realized that I have become my old man,” Scantlin said. “I seem to have inherited the same traits as him, whether they are good or bad. I’ve been listening to that one forever and now I’m living it.”

Puddle Of Mudd have scheduled five shows where the first half of the show they will perform songs from re:(disc)overed followed by the favorites:

July 23 – Webster Theater, Hartford, Connecticut
July 24 – Northern Lights, Clifton Park, New York
July 26 – Hampton Beach Casino, Hampton Beach, New Hampshire
July 28 – Starland Ballroom, Sayreville, New Jersey
July 30 – House of Blues, Cleveland, Ohio

Some information provided from a news release

Like.FM is a music community, that’s growing, and trying as hard as it can to do so organically by word of mouth. It’s the way the best sounds get around; it’s the way people who know and enjoy music get to shape the sounds around them.

We hooked up with them about a year ago. Not in any official way, but they put us front and center of one of their handful of music channels (actually 5, yes) to follow and pay attention to. There’s no money changing hands either way, I just want these guys to succeed. They’re growing, they’re refining what they do – and they listen to what you’ve got to say. In the meantime, visit our profile there and check out what’s going on. Bonus, Like.fm founder Chris’ musical tastes are almost as varied as Soundlust’s.

PS – hello all new Like.fm listeners who clicked through and found us. We’re on Twitter and on Facebook, too. Our YouTube channel coming soon.

Radiohead self-released an album again. People are again calling it the model of the future and thebestthingeverohmyGod.

OK, but what about the music?

“Lotus Flower” and “Feral” are The King of Limbs two best songs. At least on first and second listen, so take that for what it’s worth. These two have a sound that make them accessible. While this is not a barometer for musicianship, I’ve never given a band “bonus points” just because they’re famous. If they sound good, they’re good. If they sound like they’re following a trend and phoning it in; like they have no passion or vision – or skill – they’re the opposite of good.

In that vein, Radiohead sound like any other band just getting started, an idea that comes ripe with the positive, the negative and the irrelevant. And yes, Yorke in the Lotus Flower video looks like he’s trying to become the album title. Go with your bliss, man.

A fuller, more informed, review comes later.

Later this week, the show is on.

Angerfist is one of those one-member bands that have more excitement and creativity than a stadium full of Britney Spears or a pocketful of Justin Biebers.

That may sound like damning with faint praise but Angerfist is all about damnation. (Ironic that considering i found out about this event in front of a Scottsdale, Arizona church.)

Since 1997, when Danny Masseling started playing professionally at 16, he’s moved from teenage angst to grown-up digital full-frontal aural dancefloor assault. His rise and influence was sharp and quick. Samples were sparse. The beats, insightful and inventive. Masseling survives and like his European Nordic DJ brethren his name is sought to put a sound-shifting sheen to songs that are often played out the day of release.

Angerfist headlines a Jan. 21 show at Tempe’s 1300-capacity 910 Live venue (910 N. McClintock Road, Tempe, AZ). It marks their first time in Arizona and he’ll have to try really hard not to bring the house down. Limited tickets are $25 from Event Vibe, and the rest are $30, $40 at the door.

Turner & Heit crack in for the fun, battling Tranzit & Dooz (aka promoters Relentless Beats vs. TranzitHouse.com.) Also filling out the noise:

The AZHC All Stars, 6 DJs create a wicked sound. Unless they just didn’t know what they’re doing the ideas bouncing back and forth will be seamless and wonderful.

AZHC Hardstyle Team VS Hardstyle Assault. The hometown, house-proud crew.

Nemo vs Sesso – aka One Vibe Events vs Jersey Shore (Go Snooki!, go Snooki!)

Also featured: Brandon de Carlo, Robotech, and Matt Dunn.

CD. 24 Bruno Mars – Doo-Wops & Hooligans

Since few people pay attention to the charts any more, you may not know this guy had a number one song this year (or that he co-wrote Flo Rida’s “Right Round.”) Or you might. His first CD highlights, in a welcoming complexity, his mind. Bruno (first known as Peter Hernandez) finds a way to sing about anything. He’s not smooth, unless he needs to be. He’s not rough, unless he wants to be. He’s not He is 25. The album title, it makes sense.

24. Jackson Browne tickets.

He starts his Solo Acoustic tour February 23 in Santa Cruz, staying mostly in California early on. It comes oddly timed, years after the 2005 and 2008 release (iTunes link) of Solo Acoustic volumes 1 and 2, respectively. Acousticly speaking, Browne rivals Dylan for putting meaning in lyrics that resonate and flash into your consciousness when you least expect it – and most need it.

Browne, a part of the music-scape for nearly 30 years, was on tour this year with his longtime collaborator David Lindley, both to the front of the stage. Live, he can still make emotions soar. Yours and a special friend.

We owe a lot to St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music without her, music wouldn’t exist, the world would be dark and dreary, and the tuneless and tone deaf would reign.

The 17th-Century Cecilia played every instrument and her voice challenged the souls of angels, her ear finely tuned enough to hear them sing back. Why do patron saints exist? Just to be able to wear the medallion it seems? Simon and Garfunkel sang of her, as if she would be a muse.

Cecilia, apparently wanted to keep her virginity for her wedding night, but wasn’t able to keep her life as she was discovered in Italy to be a mere Christian rather than a Roman Catholic. Killed in 177 A.D. her reputation if not her corporeal body, was resurrected in 1599. Nov. 22 is the day her body was re-interred after being discovered at the church bearing her name, St. Cecilia in Trastevere.

A statue was crafted to commemorate the event, with this inscription from the sculptor: “Behold the body of the most holy virgin, Cecilia, whom I myself saw lying uncorrupt in her tomb. I have in this marble expressed for thee the same saint in the very same posture and body.”

And my first paragraph? Pure bullshit, but it’s fun to think of someone with so much power to change the music world. You know, other than Steve Jobs.

Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart
You’re shaking my confidence daily
Oh, Cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home
Come on home

Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I’m laughing,
Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I’m laughing
- Simon & Garfunkel, Cecilia
